BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Judge Holschuh was born in Ironton, Ohio, the son of Edward A. Holschuh, a millwright, and Helen Ebert Holschuh. He graduated from Ironton High School in 1944 and received a scholarship to attend Miami University at Oxford, Ohio where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa and was president of his social fraternity, the Miami Chapter of Delta Upsilon.

Upon his graduation cum laude in 1948, he received a scholarship to attend the College of Law, University of Cincinnati, from which he graduated in 1951. In law school he was Editor in Chief of the Cincinnati Law Review, a member of the Order of Coif, and president of his law school fraternity, the Chase Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta.

Following his graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk for Judge Mell G. Underwood, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio at Columbus, Ohio.

He then worked as an associate in the law firm of McNamara & McNamara and later as an associate and partner in the firm of Alexander, Ebinger, Holschuh, Fisher & McAlister, Columbus, Ohio where he concentrated his practice in trial work, both in state and federal courts. During the course of his practice he was a frequent lecturer for the Ohio Legal Center Institute and an adjunct professor for the College of Law, Ohio State University.

He served as the first Chairman of the Ohio Supreme Court's Board of Commissioners on Character and Fitness and was also a member of the Ohio Supreme Court's Evidence Rules Advisory Committee.

In 1971, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was a Life Member of the Judicial Conference of the Sixth Circuit prior to his appointment to the bench.

He is the recipient of the Award of Merit from the Ohio Legal Center Institute, the Award of Merit from the Ohio State Bar Foundation, the 1997 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Cincinnati College of Law Alumni Association, and the 2000 Ohio State Bar Foundation Ritter Award for outstanding contributions to the administration of justice.

He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on May 23, 1980. He entered on duty May 30, 1980 and opened residence chambers at the U.S. Courthouse in Columbus, Ohio. He served on the Committee on Codes of Conduct of the Judicial Conference of the United States from 1985 to 1990.

Judge Holschuh became Chief Judge of the Southern District of Ohio on March 15, 1990 and served until October 12, 1996 when he became Senior United States District Judge.
