The Advisory Committee Note accompanying Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 5.2 states, "The clerk is not required to review documents filed with the court for compliance with this rule. The responsibility to redact filings rests with counsel and the party or non-party making the filing." When reviewing documents for electronic filing, be sure to review any attachments and/or exhibits for personal identifiers.

01/28/2008   Important changes to the Rules of Federal Practice and Procedure regarding privacy of personal information took effect on December 1, 2007. These changes include modifications to forms and procedures to prevent or limit disclosure of personal information contained within documents filed with the court. This personal information includes social security numbers, names of minor children, financial account numbers, birth dates, and, in criminal cases, home addresses.
