At Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, Ohio, U.S. District Judge Michael Newman and U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Silvain, Jr. spent Thursday, May 14, in teacher Randy Sentman’s high school classroom as part of the District Court’s continuing civics outreach efforts. 

All told, Judges Newman and Silvain met with close to 100 students in five different American Government classes over the school day, talking about civics, public involvement, the Third Branch, and life as a federal judge.  The judges also took questions from the students on topics including recusal, the practical workings of due process, federal sentencing, and careers in the law. 

In the past three years, more than 1,500 students from high schools throughout the Dayton region have visited the Dayton federal courthouse for educational programming with the federal judiciary.
