Judge McFarland gives students opportunities to learn the law

U.S. District Judge Matthew McFarland spent several days giving back to the community by judging high school mock trial competitions.

And despite making arguments in front of a federal judge, high school students from Scioto County and the surrounding area felt at ease, organizer Sharee Price said.

"He’s very good at making the students feel relaxed," she said, noting that many students get nervous before they compete. "It was great to have him there."

McFarland judged district, regional and state competitions over the last few months.

Portsmouth West High School advanced to the State finals finishing in 9th place.

In total more than 100 students were able to give their presentations and receive feedback from the federal judge.

“It’s a great honor to be involved with such talented students interested in the law in such a well organized program," McFarland said. "And, being in my home county makes it that much more special.”

It was a great opportunity for the students, Price said.

"We loved having Judge McFarland involved in our competitions this year," she said.
