BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Honorable George C. Smith, District Judge, Southern District of Ohio, Eastern Division. Born in Columbus, 1935; appointed by President Reagan in 1987.

Graduate of The Ohio State University , B.A. 1957; College of Law, J.D., 1959. Admitted to the Ohio Bar 1959, The Supreme Court of The United States of America, 1971.

Assistant City Attorney, Columbus, 1959-62; Executive Assistant, Mayor of Columbus, 1962-64; Assistant Attorney General, Ohio, 1964; Prosecuting Attorney, Franklin County (Chief Counsel, 1965-70; Prosecuting Attorney, 1971-80). Franklin County Municipal Court, Columbus, 1980-85; Franklin County Common Pleas Court, 1985-87.

Judge Smith has been an active speaker. Some of these engagements have been the ABA Antitrust Section; Chair, 1994 Fed. Bench/Bar Conference for the Southern District of Ohio; Judge In Residence Program, University of Cincinnati College of Law; Lecturer, Ohio Judicial College; Alumni Speaker, O.S.U. Law graduation, 1995; and numerous other CLE programs and legal professional meetings.

Judge Smith is and has been active in civic and charitable organizations. Currently he is a member of the Ohio Bicentennial Commission and its Historic Marker Selection Committee for the 2003 state celebration. He continues his work for the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial as chair of the Visitors Center 2000 Committee. He has served as an Elder for Covenant Presbyterian Church, President of The Lawyers Club of Columbus, President of the Ohio Prosecutors Association, President of The Athletic Club of Columbus, President of the Tri-Village Shrine Club, Law Day Chair Columbus Bar Association, Trustee for various charities including Leukemia and Lung Associations, Crime Stoppers, and Project Hope.

He has been recognized as an Honorary Member of the Supreme Council, 33 Degree, by Scottish Rite Masonry; President of the 33 Degree Association, Valley of Columbus, Ohio; Superior Judicial Service Awards from the Ohio Supreme Court; Ohio Prosecutor of the Year and Ohio Leadership Awards from the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association, Resolution of Honor from the Columbus Building Trades Council.
