BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Magistrate Judge Shimeall graduated summa cum laude from the College of Wooster in 2006, where he majored in Classical Languages and minored in Philosophy. He earned his Master of Arts in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University in 2008, and his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude and Order of the Coif, from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2013, where he served as Executive Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal.
After law school, Magistrate Judge Shimeall served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edmund A. Sargus, Jr., District Judge in the Southern District of Ohio, and for the Honorable Kimberly A. Jolson, Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of Ohio. Judge Shimeall also worked in private practice for Brickler & Eckler LLP (now Bricker Graydon LLP) in the Litigation and Education practice groups. In 2018, Judge Shimeall joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio as a criminal Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA). As an AUSA, Judge Shimeall represented the United States on a range of criminal matters, including gun trafficking, drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud schemes, and violent crime. During his time as an AUSA, he was recognized for his work both in complex prosecutions and in supporting individuals reentering the community after incarceration.
Before attending law school, Judge Shimeall taught middle school English in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a Teach For America corps member and later served in recruitment and leadership roles with Teach For America. He has also been active in community and court-related organizations dedicated to improving educational opportunities and supporting returning citizens in their transition back to society.
Magistrate Judge Shimeall was appointed to his first eight-year term as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Ohio in 2026 and sits in Columbus.
